first timer question

Hi I would like to know a few things. i love tornado & severe weather coverage on the tv and would like to know if I got a box could I get more local channels then just my DMA which is lexington, KY ?
That is my main reason for wanting a box since I can't get fast internet here to watch live streaming and nope weather channel doesnt do good coverage in case that comes up.

Also how do I go about getting a box ? Once getting it is the firmware hard to download into it ? Also one more question is the super dish still in use for some local channels ? if so how could I get one ?
thanks much,
Shawn
P.S.
What more local channel markets can i POSSIBLY GET ?

I don't know what area your in but I'm in SW Mo and I get locals from Tulsa Ok to Springfield, Mo and as far south as Shreeveport, La.Locals are on a spot beam and covers about 100 mi.

You can shop for a box on line, start with the site sponser, fleabay or just google it.

You can use most any dish, but the LNB might not work well. Again, the site sponser has some dishes and the rest of the stuff you need. Also, garage sales are a good place to find a dish.

You have a lot of reading to do, start here http://www.dssrookie.com/forums/b-fo...nes-78428.html and here http://www.dssrookie.com/forums/b-fo...it-124025.html .

If you want to stay on top of severe local weather you don't need a dish. Chances are during a storm you wont have signal anyway.

whoah.. thought i just saw Dorotthy and Toto go flying by pursued by the Wicked Witch of the West... come to think of it she looked a bit like Charlie... lol if its coverage like that.... you're better off in the basement bomb shelter with a weather radio where its safe!

Oly, they sure came in handy a couple weeks ago when we had the killer tornados.By watching those locals,it was more informative than the weather channel. We saw in live time how fast and in what direction the storms came, and also helped in knowing whether your friends and relatives in a certain area were safe.

I dont mean locals locals I mean like out of my dma market coverage. I am in southeastern Kentucky near the tenn state line. north of knoxville and south of lexington.
Do u think I could maybe get huntsville alabama locals ? I sure hope so.
BTW I am a skywarn spotter/ ham radio operator so I do know how to stay ahead of the storm Not in a basement but when its local I have a spotter net going.
I already have a dish 500 system hooked up to a dish box. So do I start by getting a box and just hooking it up and playing it ?? Im kinda lost on do u have to open a fta box up and convert it or what ? Also would I need a bigger dish to get some locals like the super dish ?
tyvm,
Sean

It is all going to depend on where you fit in on the spot as to what channels you will be able to get. If you figure a 100 mi radias then you will be close. The boxes are getting easier and easier to program with USB and SD Cards etc. When you add the software, and scan the sats you should get 300 to 400 or more channels. The Dish 500 should be plenty big enough, thats what I have. Your best bet is to go to different forums and read, a lot. There is a lot of info in the stickies and FAQ's.
