Ariza satellite finder question

I have an ancient satellite finder. Its an Ariza satellite finder. simple meter on it 0-10. I have used it before and it worked good,,,although i cannot remember if I needed to hook one end to a receiver box..Can I find a satellite just by connecting dish to it?????

One end connects from the lnb and the other end conencts straight
to the receiver. The finder needs to get power from some source so
thats why one end is connected to the receiver end.

You can hook it up without a receiver also

You can use two 9 v batteries and connect them in series, and you connect positive which is now 18v to the center pin where the stb normally is connected to the finder, and the negative side of the batteries connect to tho outer part of the connector(ground) when you hook the "finder"to the lnbf you will now get readings without a stb. I never saw much use for this though as the sat "finder" will read anything and the only way to confirm what it is that you are pointing at is with a stb hooked up. Of course the expensive "meters" will give you the sat name etc...
