I have a legal question please

I have a case to sue my former employer. I fond a lawyer that will take the case. He said that he would do it on commission. That I do not have to pay him any money, but he will take a 3rd of the reward if any. But he also told me that it could still cost me thousands 5-7-8. For legal fee's. He said that a stenographer just for each witness will cost $800 a witness. Is this true anyone? I am located in the USA NorthEast.

I have had to file a couple of civil suits over the years down here in the south and the standard lawyer fees were 1/3 of the settlement if it did not have to go to trial and if it ended up having to go to trial then the lawyer got 1/2 and all filing fees etc....were paid by the lawyer. Either way there was no out of pocket expenses for me. None of them ever did have to go to trial and I got the final say as to whether or not to accept any pre-trial offers.

Proud to be a Canadian.

Do not understand how civil suits work. Was sued once over a car accident and they ended up paying for my car.

Elmilio relax, the price is whatever the client is willing to pay! but I have one question. Your state have a local Labor Department or any pro-bono lawyers ? usually help is available for persons with few or not resources for litigation process

good luck!!!

That's probably about right.. be careful though, some of those lawyers will get their fee first out of the settlement.. so if in the fine print he charges a fee of $5000 and you get a settlement of $5001, you'll get the $1 and he takes the rest.
