Splitter & diplexer information

What does the db information on splitters mean? I have a 3-way that says -7 dB out, -7 dB out, and -3.5 dB out. I have another 2 way that simply says 3.5 dB on both outputs. Is this +3.5 dB? How does a splitter differ from a diplexer?

Thank you.

A diplexer is for combing 2 signals into one cable. Like satellite and cable TV

The dB numbers on splitters refer to insertion loss. All passive components have negative insersion loss, whether the number has a (-) in front of it or not. Insertion loss is accumulative, meaning it adds up. Say you have an antenna rated at 9 dB gain. Use your -3.5dB splitter and add a 100 foot run of RG6 (-5dB) and it will quite quickly eat up any gain your antenna provides. In this case, a good quality antenna preamp is in order.

The more you use the more it decreases signal. A solid cable run under 100" is best
