Good starting tread for a newbie?

Hi, I have looked & looked the web over & think Iv come to the right forum (finally)! All this makes my head spin (computer stuff) but Im going to figure this stuff out if it kills me. LOL I never had cable & I can only get dial up on my computer because of my remote location (NC) so Im limited. Here is what I think Iv figured out so far & hope someone can help direct me in the right direction? I think I wanted a Panset 2500 & then u some how flash it (still need to do more research) now not sure now about the FTA TV .....I dont understand either fully? I cant get free tv thru my phone lines again we cant get high speed here. Is there a basic (for dummies) article or someone willing to tell me more about the 2 (in jargon a complete moron could understand)? Im ready to buy all the complicated equipment needed & do this right. Iv got some old cable dish's & would like to know if there is a place that gives step by step. Im probably asking for 2 much but hope someone can help?
