there is a thread that someone wrote (pretty extensive if i remember correctly) explaining how they hooked up their STB through their computer, and changed their recordings to DivX (or something related) I know you want to go the other way. but it's worth a look nonetheless.

I"ll bet with the right HARDWARE you can even make a toaster play DVD's...
Sarcasm aside.... I still don't see the reason behind wanting to do this. ???

The best would be if we could upload files (avi, divx whatever converted to a readable file type) to our view pvr. We can bring them out and encode them any way from there ( that was a nice little add on). But not a two way door. Not jackin this tread but its the only closest thing to running non dvb live video on our view pvrs for now. Any thoughts crowd?

Ahhh trying to figure out what you wanted to do...
A STB that is a PVR, that is simple... I have a VS7000 and it's easy to rip off of the HDD, copy to your PC with whatever prg is designed for that unit and then convert to whatever,,, In the case of the vs7000 I use USBExplorer.... As to other unit can't say too much as never experimented with them.... In short, it all depends on the unit and the file format the PVR uses to save them in...
